Our last meeting in January in Pretoria was a great success. We had nearly 25 attendees and we heard interesting papers and enjoyed great fellowship with other primate researchers and supporters.
At the Pretoria meeting, we were privileged to have 10 wonderful talks.
Kwezi Mzilikazi spoke on heterothermy in free-ranging lesser bushbabies
Judith Masters discussed her recent work on molecular data and lorisid phylogeny
Darren Curnoe told us about his research in Kimberly and the ways in which he plans to use savannah monkeys as models for human evolution.
Hannes Marais presented his research on the ecology and demographics of 21 baboon troops in the Blyde River Canyon.
Willem Ferguson demonstrated how lepilemurs could be used to study coalescence concepts of species.
Patricia Whitten discussed her work on hormones and behavior with information from lemurs and vervets.
Magali Jacquier spoke about her on-going study of immobilization of primates
Adelene Loock reviewed the legal status of vervets in South Africa and discussed her on-going study of two vervet troops in Pretoria
Kerry Slater treated us to a review of her trip to observe chimpanzees in Uganda
Trudy Turner talked about current projects on life history of vervet monkeys in the Blyde River Canyon and the taxonomy of vervets in South Africa. These projects are being conducted in conjunction with Paul Grobler and Patricia Whitten.
We were also fortunate to have Bob Venter and Antoinette Jurgens present. They were able to tell us about the work they do in running sanctuaries for vervet monkeys
We also discussed several issues of importance for PEGG
Affiliating with IPS (International Primatological Society). The IPS requires affiliates to have a statement of purpose, a list of members, representatives to IPS and incorporation as a not-for-profit organization. At the PEGG meeting we were able to begin to establish a list of members.
Judith Masters will be working with an attorney on documents of incorporation
At the end of the PEGG meeting we had our first vote. Judith Masters and Trudy Turner were designated as official representatives to IPS. In our discussion with IPS we will discuss hosting the international meetings in South Africa.
We discussed some ways to establish a count of primates in South Africa. We are awaiting additional information on how to go about doing this.
We are launching a web site. Willem Ferguson will discuss obtaining space on the University of Pretoria site. David Beller is working on designing the site. We hope to have it operational in the near future. More details about the last meeting and the talks will be available on the web site.
